My Medical Mission Work in the DR ~ Adara Pappas

03.04.2019

HI!! My name is Adara Pappas and i'm from Jacksonville, Florida. My major is Biomedical Sciences Pre-Med. Ever since I was a little girl, I have aspired to become a pediatrician. Helping and caring for others in any way possible has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I have always known there was something bigger for me out there and my heart has been set on medical mission work for so long. I knew about medical mission work for physicians who already had their M.D. but did not know of any opportunities where I could do medical mission work while completing my undergrad until Global Medical Training came to Auburn. Global Medical Training is a nonprofit organization that provides free medical and dental services to impoverished communities across the world. I had the amazing opportunity to go to the Dominican Republic over spring break with GMT and could not feel more blessed. In the Dominican Republic, we traveled to four different villages every day and saw a total of 1,372 patients in a span of four days. Under the supervision of physicians, we took the patients history and diagnosed the patient with our best medical knowledge. Translators were sitting directly beside us at all times to make the process easier. I cannot express to anyone who is on edge about going on a medical mission trip enough, it will be the best decision of your life! Just from this trip alone, I can wholeheartedly say I have become a better person and future physician from this experience. I will continue to do medical mission work as a pre-med student and hope to travel to impoverished countries as a physician in order to change people’s lives both domestically and abroad.

We are so proud of Adara and cannot wait to see what the future holds for her throughout her medical journey!!
