Internship Spotlight~ McKenna Moorhead

McKenna is a rising junior majoring in Apparel Merchandising with a business minor! She is from Chicago, IL, and is so lucky to call Auburn her home. This semester McKenna has had the pleasure to

be our sororities social chair which she has said has been so much fun! This summer McKenna is interning with Vera Wang at their Bridal Flagship store in Chicago. Growing up with only brothers at home she knew she wanted to join a sorority, and Pi Phi was the perfect fit for her. During the school year McKenna works for an app called Bumble and is Auburn's Campus Director (Women empowering other women WOOHOO!)! Freshman year she was on the water-skiing team (very briefly lol) and now mainly focuses all her time on being the social chair, and any other opportunities that find her. McKenna was also last years nomination for Pi Phi at the Ms. Panhellenic pageant which she says was an awesome because she to get to represent all her best friends. At her internship with Vera Wang McKenna says everyday is different. Some days they have a dozen brides coming in, and some days they only have a couple. A few weeks ago they had their trunk show which was by far McKenna's favorite experience thus far. Two models walked through the showroom in the Spring 2019 collection, while over hundred guests came to view it. The collection is all colored wedding gowns, and they were some of the most beautiful creations she's ever seen. They served drinks, and appetizers, and it was such an amazing event to network and meet people. For McKenna, she loves helping out as much as possible, even getting to assist in zipping a brides dress up is such a special thing for her. You see women come in to the store everyday getting the most special dress of their lives, which is such a special moment for them, and so incredible that McKenna gets to be apart of their experience. Working at Vera Wang McKenna already has learned so much more than any class could teach her. Getting real world experience with people who have been in the industry for years has been so helpful for her. Vera Wang is a luxury store, and when people going in they are spending crazy amounts of money on such a special item, so you constantly have to be prepared for anyone who could walk through the door. Being organized, and knowing all of the merchandise that is being sold is so important in order for McKenna to be as helpful as possible to the consultants who are selling the gowns, because at the end of the day they are here to sell brides their dream dress. That's why people come to the store. McKenna's best advice for someone looking for an internship in fashion is persistence. Its crazy that even though Chicago is such a big city there aren't many internship opportunities in fashion. So when going out on an internship search she called almost every store on Michigan Avenue asking if they had a program, in order to keep her options open. When she made the call to Vera Wang and got the interview she made sure to continue to email the general manager and develop a relationship with her! Networking is so important in this business so you really have to put yourself out there, meeting people that work in fashion, makeup artists, event planners, hair stylists, and even DJ's can help you expand your network and help you meet amazing people, with even more amazing job opportunities! We are so proud of McKenna for doing such a great job at an amazing internship opportunity and can't wait to see what she does in the future!!
